Manufacturing

Production jobs, bills of material, costing and the floor, on the same ledger as the books.

The situation

The floor, the stock and the ledger disagree, so nobody trusts the cost.

Words we already know

  • Ply
  • Flute take-up
  • Deckle
  • Wastage
  • Job costing

A factory usually runs on three systems that do not know about each other: the ledger, whatever tracks stock, and the production floor, which is often a whiteboard and a WhatsApp group. Each is right about its own half of the truth, so month end becomes an investigation and the cost of a job is an estimate defended rather than a number read.

We build production, inventory, costing and the general ledger as one system, where every document posts a journal entry. A job card draws its materials from the same stock the purchase order fed, and the cost that comes out the far end is the one the quote was built from. It is the domain our own ERP product runs in every day, which is why we argue about the data model before anyone writes code.

What we build here

The systems this sector actually needs.

  • Production planning and job cards
  • Bills of material and production formulas
  • Costing engines, down to the material parameter
  • Inventory, purchasing and vendor management
  • Double-entry general ledger under all of it
  • Statutory e-invoicing, filed from the same records
  • Job release and dispatch without re-keying
  • Approval chains with a named owner at each step
Evidence

We run our own system in this sector.

Quick Safa is our accounting and production management system, live in production, supported by us. Operating it is why we argue about the data model before anyone writes code.

Next step

Describe it in plain language and we will come back with the architecture, the first milestone and the risk.
